AK arrived on time and had done the "homework" I
had asked him to complete. We discussed what he had discovered about various
master's degree programs and the GRE. It
was the GRE that was most surprising to him and caused him to realize his need
to expand his English vocabulary. I
think that is a win! It gives him a purposeful goal and gives me a teachable
focus.
Today's lesson was on idioms. This is a topic AK wanted to work on. We
reviewed six different idioms. I was pleased he
had a decent understanding of two, didn't understand two, and had heard
two but didn't quite understand them. Together, we reviewed the meaning of each,
watched a video for one, used each idiom in an oral exercise where he had to
respond to a question using the correct idiom, and he wrote sentences using the
idioms.
After this, we searched for some of the vocabulary words used in the GRE. Together we selected a word, I
defined it, looked it up via an online dictionary and then we discussed the
word and how it would be used. Finally, we discussed how inflection and facial
expressions are important in our communications and how they help others better
understand what we may be trying to express.
