Marian CO #5: Dr. Rios Speaking Class
This was a Group 4 Speaking Class. Immediately noticeable was the student's capacity for communicating in English. Class started with a "rapid fire" drill. A topic was given and the selected student had to express their opinion on the topic. There was a disclaimer in the beginning that the topics could be controversial and direction that this was not a debate, but an exercise to express opinion. For example, one topic was to share views on the use of corporal punishment in schools. The students shared their views with competent clarity and the listening students respected the ground-rules.
After this exercise, the class moved on to the course project which required students to conduct a survey. The students began work on writing their findings in preparation for an oral presentation and Dr. Rios moved around the room and provided guidance to the students. My takeaway was how this lesson showed the coalescence of listening, speaking and writing.
