Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, 9 July at 4:00am AEST (Zoom)
Student: Dongwoon Kang
I am excited to share about this session! I cannot begin to express how proud I am of Youngsun’s improvement and increased confidence…extremely noticeable! This session, I utilized some aspects of my listening exercises, a kin to the Grammar Lesson Plan, where the Top Gun: Maverick movie clip was leveraged to create interactionism.
During this session, we watched a short movie clip of August Rush, which brought back some great memories for Youngsun. She clearly communicated her approach to music composition and music tutoring. Additionally, Youngsun effectively conveyed how her experiences with music composition was markedly different from what was demonstrated in the movie. She asserted that the movie scenarios were unrealistic and clearly articulated points to substantiate her position.
For Youngsun’s second “fieldwork exercise”, I requested that she blog here as my co-blogger describing her experience in the tutoring sessions:
My Experience from the Second Session
In the second session, my English tutor expected to discuss a topic related to music with me.
She played some video clips of August Rush, a story of a music genius boy, and let me talk about
my opinion. I watched this film, August Rush, fourteen years ago when it was premiered in South
Korea. I was surprised that I made the same comment this time. It is very interesting to get
inspiration for some music. But musical knowledge, for example, how to use an instrument and
how to notate on a score has to be educated to develop the skills because they are not inherent. It
is possible for the small boy to fill up his head with lots of musical ideas like melodies, rhythmic
patterns, and chords, however, it is not likely to be possible to create a grand score depending on
various notation rules. Audiences would probably say that the boy is a genius. But most
professional composers would think that this film involves a fictional story. By the way, it was
the most exciting for me to express my ideas and my feelings about the movie in her class. I still
have some difficulties in speaking long sentences, but the experience from the class was
definitely useful for me. I am hopeful that I will be able to improve my speaking skill with many
practices.
For the first run, I believe Youngsun did well. There is room for improvement, but I do appreciate her efforts and willingness to improve.
