Per request, our tutoring session focused on two items. First we reviewed the Florida Driver's Handbook together, skimming parts and using a more focused reading for other parts. This was a valuable use of our time as AA wishes to get his license. The handbook proved to be a goldmine of material for us to discuss including topics such as public records, wearing seatbelts, traffic/road signs, revocation and suspension of a license and general safety issues.
With the last 15 minutes of our tutoring, we continued on
our review of phrasal verbs. I used a
TOFEL workbook I picked up at the local library. It had a nice list of phrasal verbs with a
corresponding definition. We reviewed
about ten of these terms and then reviewed sentences in which AA had to replace
the one-word verb with a phrasal verb from the list. We did refer back to the list of phrasal
verbs as this was a very challenging task.
With time to use the phrasal verbs in his daily communications, this
task should become easier. This task was valuable to AA because it will help
prepare him for the academic skills portion of the TOEFL.
My take away: learning is enhanced by the student's interest
in the topic!
